| Do you know the origins of winnie the pooh? he's canadian! | | The ever adorable image of a yellow colored bear in a red T-shirt is a recognizable visual world wide. It's stocked on toy store shelves. It adorns the pages of countless books. It can be viewed on the Disney channel. It's even been printed onto nursery accessories. So well-loved is the modern image of Winnie the Pooh that it's become a marketing giant. But what of Winnie's history? Where did he come from? Was he ever fact before fiction?
Winnie did begin as fact, indeed.
During World War I, troops were being moved across country from Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) and heading east for European shores. On one such train ride in 1914, and at a layover in White River, Ontario, a lieutenant by the name of Harry Colebourn purchased an orphaned black American bear cub for $20 from a trapper who had killed its mother. Colebourn named the bear "Winnipeg" after his hometown.
Winnipeg quickly earned the affection of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade and traveled on to England with them as their mascot. However, after the troops were assigned duty in France, it was clear that he wouldn't be able to accompany them any further. Colebourn, who had been advanced to the rank of Captain, took...

Have these two forces joined to create a corrupt system in the name of justice have the guilty been allowed to go free? What of the innocent? What of the aboriginal people driven into submission or tricked? Not one was above the other as the home land expelled it's problem and cast out their problems to be dealt with by ohter people. The problem began at home, a problem that could be fixed wasn't.Do you know how to read? Can you think of a fix to the problem of corruption and abuse?I know a few repairs that are quick and easy.

| | Origins of Food | | Chicken balls are NOT Chinese, but a North American invention (have gone to a real Chinese restaurant and been the only caucasion in the whole restaurant with the menu in Chinese - there was no chicken balls...Where did spaghetti come from? Anyone know? Most of us know that the ice cream cone was born on Coney Island where an ice cream salesman and a waffle salesman were beside each other and rather than giving away his dishes, he opted for another idea...How about french fries? Where did they come from? Any other yummies that people know the history of and want to share? | |
| | Grimace Origins | | I came across a discussion where the one who started it was asking if we had any photos with a Ronald McDonald Statue.
It then occured to me of another McDonald's character: Grimace. According to Wikipedia, he used to be "Evil Grimace" and eventually turned good; now endorsing milkshakes and does not represent any food item like Hamburglar and the Fry Guys.
When I didn't knew of his official origin, I heard a lot of hilarious suggestions of where Grimace came from. Like he used to be milkshake that went bad, or mashed potatoes that went bad. lol.
Have you guys heard of any other funny and hilarious suggestions of Grimace's origin?
| | The Childhood Origins Of Terrorism | | By Lloyd deMause
November 2001"He who washes my body around my genitals should wear gloves so that I am not touched there."--Will of Mohammed Atta
Because so much of the world outside the West has for historical reasons fallen far behind in the evolution of their childrearing practices, the resulting vast differences between psychoclasses has recently turned into a global battle by terrorists against liberal Western values. In order to understand this new battle, it would be useful to know what makes a terrorist-what developmental life histories they share that can help us see why they want to kill "American infidels" and themselves-so we can apply our efforts to removing the sources of their violence and preventing terrorism in the future.
The roots of terrorism lie, I believe, not in this or that American foreign policy error but in the extremely abusive families of the terrorists. Children who grow up to be Islamic terrorists are products of a misogynist fundamentalist system that often segregates the family into two separate areas: the men's area and the woman's area, where the children are brought up and which the father rarely visits. Even in countries like Saudi...
| | Mythical origins of 420 | | 420, 4:20, 4/20, or however you want to write it has infiltrated the english language as slang for Marijuana, more accurately for using marijuana, so much so that April 20th is practically a holiday for stoners, I know at my place of employment even the most conservative of people are discussing marijuana in a postive light. So what are the origins of this phrase? Does anyone really know, there are alot of theories, but nothing is 100% confirmed.Theory #1: The police code for drug useTheory #2: Many famous herb friendly musicians died due to drug related reasons, some even believe many of them died actually on April 20thTheory #3: Students in California used to meet at 4:20pm every day to smoke up, spawning the question "Are you going to 4:20 today?" Which of course led to the current status. What do you think the real root is, or do you know other theories? | |
| | Does anyone know the origins of Mother's Day? | | After wondering who and why Mother's Day was created I decided to take a "google". of course, http://www.howstuffworks.com gave me the best run down on the origins and the workings of this upcoming holiday celebrated in many countries. Here's what I found:Some historians claim that Mother's Day originates from ancient spring festivals dedicated to maternal goddesses. Greeks honored Rhea, wife of Cronus and mother of the gods and goddesses of Greek mythology. Ancient Romans had a spring festival dedicated to Cybele, also a mother goddess. Called Hilaria, this celebration lasted for three days and included parades, games and masquerades. A more modern version of Mother's Day began in the 1600s in England. Mothering Sunday was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Small gifts were given, and a special dessert called a simnel cake was served. In the United States, Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (famous for writing the words to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic"). But it was a woman who was never a mother herself who led the campaign for national recognition of Mother's Day. Anna Jarvis held a... | |
| | Heroes: Origins | | NBC has announced its fall schedule and Heroes is, of course, coming back. But there's also going to be a spin-off series, Heroes: Origins. Each episode of Origins will introduce a new character and then viewers will be able to vote on which one they want added to the cast of the main show during the next season. Both shows will add up to 30 hours of Heroes next season (which is cool.)I think the new show could be fun. What do you think? | |
